Citizenship is a relatively new subject in the English national curriculum that covers topics such as politics, crime and justice, sociology and global issues such as inequality and the environment. It can be compared to Modern Studies in Scotland and Civics classes in America, among other lessons across the world in countries that think their young people ought to have some idea of what's going on.
I fell into teaching Citizenship almost accidentally, having spent three years getting a law degree and an understanding that law ultimately destroyed anyone who used it to earn a living. As a tree-hugging-trotskyite I had to apply for jobs in "challenging urban comprehensives", and I discovered I loved it.
